3.1.1: Blood Detectives 4.1: The Heart
Function of each major components of blood:
Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, and Plasma. Red blood cells bring oxygen from the lungs to the body cells and carbon dioxide back to the lungs. RBC's contain hemoglobin which allows oxygen to bind to it. White blood cells usually fight off outside threats. This includes bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and other harmful parasites. Platelets stick together to clot blood. Plasma is the liquid, non living part of blood. Plasma transports blood cells throughout the body and also hold essential vitamins and nutrients. |
Deoxygenated blood, returning from the systematic circuit flows through the right side of the heart to reach the lungs. Once there, the blood will become oxygenated, flow back to the left side of the heart, where oxygenated blood will be transported throughout the systematic circuit.
