Objective: To understand why injecting insulin into the body necessary.
Here is me holding my project of how insulin travels through the blood and its role to the human body.
My contraption clearly demonstrated how insulin keeps sugar from building up in the blood.
Lab Results
Here is my lab conclusions as to why taking insulin is the proper thing to do versus rebelling and not taking the injections.
Not taking the injections can be a lethal decision, specifically those who are type 1 diabetics.
The function of insulin is to process glucose (a type of sugar)
into energy. This energy helps us to move, to grow new cells, and to
repair all types of cell breakdown which occur every day. In a normally
functioning body, the pancreas produces exactly the right amount of
insulin for it to do its job and move glucose from the bloodstream into
our cells. The function of insulin is critical to having a healthy body. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. The pancreas is a vital organ whose placement is behind the stomach. The pancreas produces all types of digestive enzymes and hormones designed to breakdown the food we eat into glucose.Once the blood sugar level starts to rise, the pancreas secretes insulin. Every cell in the body actually has insulin receptors which take in the insulin and bind it to the cell. Once the insulin is attached to a cell, that cell is able to absorb glucose from the bloodstream and draw it into the center of the cell where it turned into energy.
When this cycle begins to fail is when type 1 or type 2 diabetes begins to take place.

Reflection
In particular, this lab taught me the specifics of diabetes. I did not know that insulin was so vital, may it be in a diabetic or not. Everyone needs insulin to function properly. I did not even begin to think of how important insulin really is before i took Biomedical, where I learned this condition in depth.
Strengths
I thoroughly enjoyed constructing my own version of the roles of insulin. The visualization of it helped me understand the function of insulin, and how/why diabetes occur.
Participating in visual projects always help me remember important information, especially for future tests. |
Weaknesses
Although now I have an understanding, I did not previously before these labs. This often frustrated me and brought my self esteem down. Doing the Diabetic Emergency lab was often a struggle and I did not know what I was doing, especially when it asked me to explain the role of insulin and how it works.
Again, since I am a visual learner, I did not understand the majority of this lab until we did the visual project, which was unfortunate for my grade. |
